Welcome to the Southeast Chapter of Texas AWWA newsletter of upcoming events, and more from our membership. We have lots of exciting events coming up so take a minute to look below for more information.

Nominations for 2012 Executive Committee

After an eventful year, your 2011 Executive Committee is getting ready to transition to its new slate of officers and committee chairs for 2012. The Nominations Committee is soliciting nominations from its membership who wish to be part of the 2012 Executive Committee. The slate of candidates will be presented at our December Chapter Meeting.

Please send the names and contact information to our Chapter President, Mr. Chris Varnon, at president@setawwa.org to be considered.

Website Sponsorships

The sponsorship program is more than just recruiting sponsors for individual events. The program also recognizes firms who support other important chapter endeavors, most notably our website.

The local website is a great place to check out news, upcoming events, past presentations, and ways to help our organization. Website sponsorships are available for $250.

Baytown Area Water Authority - Water Plant Tour

The Baytown Area Water Authority (BAWA) will be providing a tour for our members of the Fritz Lanham Water Treatment Plant at 7425 Thompson Road, Baytown, TX.

Sign-In will begin at 4pm with tours starting promptly at 4:30pm. Food and refreshments will be served after the tours. This event is free for all public sector employees and $10 for all other guests. Proceeds from this event will benefit "Beer for Us, Water for People".

This is a great chance to get a close-up look of this facility. Space is limited, so sign up now.

Texas Hold'em Tournament

Come on over and bring your best poker face. The YP group will have a Texas Hold'em Tournament at the H.E.S.S. Club on Friday, October 28th at 6pm. Buy-in is $40 to play, or just come out and watch the action for $5.

All payments will be made at the door. Reservations are REQUIRED, so contact Coleman Philley, cphilley@browngay.com to reserve your seat now.

Water For People 6th Annual Fundraiser

The 6^th Annual “Beer for Us, Water For People” fundraiser at the St. Arnold Brewery is coming up on Wednesday, November 2nd from 6-8pm.Tickets will be $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Libations and some food will be provided. Proceeds benefit Water for People.

For those that aren’t aware, the St. Arnold Brewery has moved into a nice new facility at 2000 Lyons Ave, just north of downtown. If you have not been to the new location, this is a great opportunity to check it out (same great beer, now with A/C).

Texas Section Scholarship Deadline July 8th

The deadline for applying for a Texas Section AWWA Scholarship is fast approaching. An applicant must be either a recent college graduate about to start college, or a current full time college student taking a minimum of 21 credit hours per 12-month period. All applicants must be a curent Texas AWWA member, or an immediate family member.

Local Chapter Honors

Congratulations to the City of Houston Top Ops Team for winning at Texas Water 2011! After a fierce competition, the team from our local chapter won out and will represent the State of Texas at the national competition. The team will compete in the 2011 American Water Works Association (AWWA) Annual Conference and Exposition (ACE) in Washington D.C.. The team members include: Chris Thompson, Chris O'Donnell, Scott Kenley, Drew Molly, and Joey Eickhoff.

Also at Texas Water 2011, David Scholler, P.E. was named as the AWWA Texas Section Chair.

Young Professionals Happy Hour

Join our Young Professionals Group on Wednesday May 25th at Chuy's on Westheimer. This is a great opportunity to meet other young people working in the water profession.

The 2011 Science Engineering Fair of Houston Judging

The 2011 Science Engineering Fair of Houston is coming up April 7th-9th at the George R. Brown Convention Center, and SETAWWA will once again be co-sponsoring as a Special Awarding Agency with the local WEAT chapter. This is a good time to lend your scientific mind as a judge for the competition. To learn more about the 52nd annual fair, please visit their website.

Joint TAWWA/WEAT Half-Day Program

In case you missed it, the joint TAWWA/WEAT half-day seminar, held at HESS club on February 22nd, was a great success. Thank you to all of you that supported the event by attending and sponsoring. There were over 100 attendees and 28 sponsors.

A very special thank you is due to our gracious speakers that addressed many of the issues facing the water and wastewater community in Southeast Texas, as well as three students from our local universities discussing some of the research being undertaken to forward the science of the water works industry.

Texas Water 2011 Utility Competition Sponsorships

It's not too late to get your team sponsored. The Southeast Chapter of TAWWA and WEAT – Section 9 are jointly sponsoring three to five teams who register to compete at Texas Water 2011. A total of $2,000 will be divided among the teams selected. Our purpose is to encourage and support teams to compete from our Southeast Chapter Area.

The 2011 Science Engineering Fair of Houston Judging

2011 SETAWWA Student Technical Research Paper Winners

A student technical research paper contest was held on February 22, 2011 at HESS Club as part of our 4th annual half-day seminar. This is the second year that the Southeast Chapter of Texas AWWA conducted the student paper contest. The call for papers was opened from early October 2010 through mid-November 2010. The subjects of the technical research papers included raw/drinking water quality, water/wastewater treatment, and non-potable water use/reuse.

Congratulations to our winners: Neranga Gamage, Qianzhen Xie, and Yi Zhang. See the webpage for full details.

Our annual half day seminar is less than a month away. We are excited to join forces with WEAT Section 9 this year to make this a joint TAWWA/WEAT Event and expand our list of topics and attendees. The program is entitled "Current Challenges in the Water and Wastewater Industry in Southeast Texas". SETAWWA is proud to join with WEAT to host our annual half-day seminar “Current Challenges in Potable Water Industry in Southeast Texas” in February this year.
