FOR MARCH 12TH EVENING JUDGING ONLY

The Engineer Science Fair of Houston is seeking volunteers to judge student's science fair projects. AWWA and WEAT join together to honor students whose projects specialize in water topics.

The judging will take place on Friday, March 12th starting at 6:30 pm at the George R Brown Convention Center. All volunteers should arrive between 5:45 - 6:00 pm so we can divide up the judges to judge the different age groups.

Please contact Aubrey Lofton at loftonam@cdm.com, if you are interested so we know how many volunteers we have and might still need. We always have a good time at this event and it’s a joy to see what the students come up with every year.

The Southeast Chapter of Texas AWWA invites you to its first 2010 luncheon meeting on February 18th at HESS from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. William (Bill) Espey, Jr., P.E., Ph.D., D.WRE, will give the presentation of the water right system in Texas and the permitting process of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The presentation will also include a detailed description of the water rights in the lower Trinity and San Jacinto River Basins and the impact of those water rights on existing and future growth. Finally, Dr. Espey will discuss the current permitting activities of the City of Houston and the related SB3 environmental flows discussions.

Dr. Espey is president of Espey Consultants, Inc. with offices in Austin (corporate), Dallas, Houston, Amarillo, New Braunfels, and Laredo. Dr. Espey has specialized in water supply, water rights, water availability modeling, water quality analysis and modeling, wastewater permitting, instream flow analysis, environmental flow analysis, and bay and estuary evaluations. His pioneering work in urban hydrology is documented in a number of text books, design manuals and various professional publications and has been utilized in various parts of the country (City of Austin, TVA, State of Pennsylvania, and Denver Urban Drainage and Flood Control District) in terms of design and floodplain delineation.

This luncheon meeting will also include the election of new 2010 Executive and Standing Committee members. The proposed slate of officers and chairs includes:

Safe drinking water, basic health, hygiene education and sanitation facilities are nonexistent for impoverished people in the developing countries throughout the world. WHO/UNICEF estimates that the combination of these conditions results in 6,000 deaths everyday, mostly children. In response, a dedicated handful of North American water professionals from the American Water Works Association established Water For People in 1991 and Water For People-Canada in 1995. They saw this as a natural extension of what their 60,000 members already do on a daily basis -- bring safe, sufficient drinking water to their own communities. 2010 Scholarship

This will become available in late April and an announcement will be emailed. Please subscribe to our "eBlast" to receive the announcement. College students will be requested to submit their application to the TAWWA Scholarship Committee before the July deadline.

2009 Scholarship

The Southeast Chapter gave scholarships to six students from this area. One state finalist received a $2000 scholarship and the remaining four students received Chapter Scholarship of $750 each.

2008 Scholarship

The State Scholarship Committee received 22 scholarship applications this year. There were 11 scholarships awarded this year. Two scholarships were given to SE Chapter area students. A state scholarship ($2000) was awarded to Ms. Jillian Robinson, attending Stephen F. Austin State University. A southeast chapter scholarship ($2000) was awarded to Ms. Frances Rabalais, attending Louisiana State University. Please join me in extending congratulations to our two Houston area scholarship recipients.

Southeast Chapter of Texas AWWA Chapters of Texas AWWA has been formed in several areas of the state so that the AWWA members can easily interact with the local water professionals in their area and partipitate in local activities. The Southeast Chapter of Texas AWWA encompasses 22 southeast counties of Texas. As a member of the Texas Section of American Water Works Association, you have an opportunity to meet and build relationships with your peers in the water community, attend bi-monthly meetings with other water professionals, as well as share ideas and information.
