2010 Science Engineering Fair of Houston

On Friday, March 12^th, nine volunteers met at George R. Brown Convention Center, Hall E, to judge the water quality science fair projects for the 2010 Science Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH). Judging occurs in each of the three Individual Divisions: the Junior/Middle School (7^th and 8^th grades); the Ninth (9^th grade); and the Senior (10, 11, 12^th grades). Each division is subdivided into 13 subject classifications such as biochemistry/microbiology, environmental sciences, engineering, chemistry, and earth/space science. There were 1300 projects at Exhibition Hall E and these were just the best projects from schools in 13 counties surrounding and including Harris County. Prior to judging, all project displays must be inspected and approved by the Rules/Safety Committee and the Scientific Review Committee on March 11^th. Project not approved are removed from the Exhibition Hall E prior to judging.

For over ten years, WEAT and SE Chapter of Texas AWWA (Team) have jointly provided judges and cash prizes to the wining students. The Team is one of over 40 associations, colleges, and private entities making contributions to SEFH as well as providing volunteer judges and cash prizes. The Team of volunteers split up into three groups to judge the three divisions including 19 projects in the Junior/Middle School Division, 25 projects in the Ninth Division, and 19 projects in the Senior Division.

Example Senior projects included tertiary treatment of specific pollutants with specific aquatic plants, pre-treatment of lead ion using crushed shells with different lead ion concentrations, and the effects of pharmaceuticals (varying concentrations) on blue bioluminescence flagellates at various temperatures and pHs. Each project was judged based on its project’s objectives, design, execution (yes, they described their project), conclusions, and presentation. All of the judges commented how much fun they had meeting the students and hearing about each of their projects.

The awards were presented at the awards ceremony on Saturday, March 13th. All of the students were thrilled to win an award. First, second, and third place winners were given award certificates in each division and a total of $1500 in cash prizes was disbursed to the winners.

September 2010 Friends, I extend appreciation to Texas Senator Dan Patrick for his terrific guest speaker presentation at our 4th Annual Dinner Meeting on August 26th. He enlightened us about his two terms in office (he's voted on over 8,000 bills!), the politics of politicians in Texas government, our good Texas politics legacy that has left Texas with $5.0 billion in rainy day funds that no other state can boast, his genesis of S.B. 361 to create protective measures in Harris County that will provide water during major emergency events (like Hurricane Ike did), and more. He ended by requesting us all to keep abreast of the legislation being considered and to get involved and continue Texas' legacy of providing for future generations. Southeast Chapter of Texas AWWA Chapters of Texas AWWA has been formed in several areas of the state so that the AWWA members can easily interact with the local water professionals in their area and partipitate in local activities.
